Check Engine Light

What to Do When You See Your Vehicle's Check Engine Light

We've all been there. You're driving down the road, and all of a sudden "FLASH!" - on pops your check engine light. This notorious alert light is so often associated with the necessity of major vehicle engine issues. But how concerned should you be next time you see this light pop up in your Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, or RAM? And is this light necessarily a reason to stop driving your car right away, when you see it? At Williamsburg Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, RAM we can address all your potential questions or concerns surrounding this pesky light.

About the Check Engine Light

The Check Engine Light, AKA the "Malfunction Indicator Lamp", or MIL for short, is a light that pops up when your vehicle's onboard engine computer indicates that there is some issue going on. What this issue could be is anyone's guess - that is, until you bring your car in for service and a qualified technician checks to see which, if any, diagnostic trouble codes (or DTCs) have been thrown.

What Does The Light Mean?

There's not really any significant way to know why your light is popping up (aside from obvious signs of engine failure or overheating). The light could signify problems with your oxygen sensor, catalytic converter, or even a loose gas cap. But it could also indicate much more serious engine issues.
